How to Store Perfume So It Lasts

Fragrance degrades when exposed to the wrong conditions. Storing perfume correctly isn't complicated — but getting it wrong can ruin an expensive bottle faster than you'd expect.

The Three Enemies: Light, Heat, and Humidity

Light breaks down aromatic molecules through photodegradation. Keep perfume away from windowsills.

Heat accelerates oxidation. Bathrooms are the worst storage location. Ideal temperature: 55–70°F.

Humidity introduces moisture and encourages oxidation of natural ingredients.

Best Storage Practices

  • Keep bottles in their original boxes.
  • Store upright, not on their side.
  • Avoid the bathroom. Use a bedroom drawer or closet shelf.
  • Don't leave bottles half-empty for years. Oxygen promotes oxidation.

How Long Does Perfume Keep?

Under good conditions, most EDPs last 3–5 years. Signs it's turned: a sharp or sour note, color change, and a dramatically thinner character. All Petals & Smoke fragrances are bottled to current industry standards.
