Our Commitment
Making a great fragrance takes longer than most people think. It requires more materials, more failures, more rigorous testing, and more honest conversations about what isn't working. That process isn't glamorous — but it's the only one that produces something worth wearing.
This is how we work.
We Formulate. We Don't Repackage.
The inspired-by fragrance industry has a shortcut that's become standard practice: buy a pre-blended concentrate from an aroma chemical supplier, dilute it to a finished percentage, and bottle it. It's fast. It's cheap. And it shows — in thin projection, short longevity, and accords that fall apart by the third hour.
We don't do that.
Every Petals & Smoke formula is built from individual aromatic materials — not pre-made oil packages. We select each component on its own merits, blend and test iterations from scratch, and take full responsibility for how the finished scent performs. That means more time, more cost, and more iterations before anything earns a release. It also means a fragrance that's actually ours — engineered to our standards, tested to our benchmarks, and impossible to replicate by anyone buying the same off-the-shelf concentrate.
Ingredient Selection: No Cheap Shortcuts
We are deliberate about materials. When a better-quality version of an ingredient exists, we use it — even when a cheaper alternative would be functionally acceptable to an untrained nose. Quality shows in longevity. It shows in the dry-down. It shows in how a fragrance interacts with your skin chemistry over hours rather than minutes.
We do not dilute our formulas with carrier oil or alcohol to hit a price point. What you're wearing is the full formula at its intended concentration. Every drop is doing work.
Performance Engineering
Every fragrance we release is an Eau de Parfum. That concentration level — typically ranging from 20-30% aromatic concentration depending on the formula — isn't chosen for marketing purposes. It's chosen because we have longevity targets, and lighter concentrations don't meet them.
Our target for wear time is 8 to 12 hours. We test this rigorously — on skin, in real conditions, across multiple testers with different skin chemistry.
Small-Batch Production
We produce in small batches by design. Small-batch production gives us direct oversight of every run, ensures ingredients are fresh and within optimal performance windows, and allows us to catch and correct quality issues before they reach a customer.
Every batch is produced in the United States, in our own facility, under direct supervision. There is no contract manufacturing partner, no offshore blending, no third-party production that runs without us present.
What We Refuse to Do
- We will not purchase bulk pre-blended fragrance oils and bottle them as our own formulas.
- We will not release a fragrance that hasn't completed our full development and testing cycle.
- We will not dilute our formulas below their intended concentration to reduce per-unit cost.
- We will not substitute lower-quality materials into a formula without retesting and validating the change.
- We will not claim performance our fragrances haven't earned in testing.
