Two of the most useful concepts in fragrance — and two of the most frequently confused. Projection and sillage both describe how a fragrance extends beyond your skin, but they measure different things at different moments in a scent's life.
Projection: How Far a Fragrance Radiates
Projection refers to the distance a fragrance travels from your body into the space around you. A high-projection fragrance announces itself before you enter a room. A low-projection fragrance stays close to the skin — sometimes called a "skin scent."
Projection is primarily driven by volatile compounds in the top and heart notes. Certain aromatic materials are naturally more radiating: bright citrus molecules, hedione, and fresh ozonic accords all push fragrance outward. Heavy resins, dense woods, and thick balsamic materials tend to stay put.
Sillage: The Trail You Leave Behind
Sillage (pronounced roughly "see-yazh") refers to the scent trail a fragrance leaves as you move through space. It's what people notice as you walk past, what lingers in the elevator after you leave.
Sillage is more closely tied to the mid-to-base notes. Strong fixatives — musks like Iso E Super, ambroxide, or natural ambergris tincture — are the backbone of good sillage.
How They Differ (and Why It Matters)
A fragrance can have strong projection but poor sillage — it hits hard and fades fast. The reverse is also possible: subtle projection but strong sillage. The ideal for most daily wear is balanced: enough projection to be present without being intrusive, and enough sillage to carry through the day.
What Affects Both
- Concentration: EDP formulas generally outperform EDT in both dimensions.
- Ingredient quality: Premium aromatic materials have better diffusion characteristics.
- Skin chemistry: Skin that retains oil naturally amplifies both.
- Application amount: Two to three sprays to pulse points is the standard starting point.
- Weather: Humidity helps project fragrance; cold suppresses it.
The best way to assess either quality for yourself is wearing a fragrance through a full day. Our sampler sets give you enough volume to test both projection and sillage through a real day of wear.
